MCST Mission Statement

The MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) is dedicated to production of a high quality MODIS calibration product for the MODIS Science Team. This product is a precursor to every MODIS geophysical science product. MCST works for the MODIS Science Team Leader and has three major responsibiitities:

Develop and Maintain the Calibration Product (L1B) Algorithm

The Level 1B software converts the raw instrument data into calibrated geophysical units. MCST is responsible for developing:

  • the physical basis for the sensor calibration
  • the calibration algorithm
  • the code and all the parameters necessary to run the code
  • quality assurance and verification of the Level 1B product enhancements through research and code advancement

Flight Operations

MCST serves as the Science Team representatives for MODIS operations on orbit through command and control of the instrument. These reponsibilities include:

  • developing the MODIS operations scenarios
  • creating and ensuring the validity of the operations database
  • monitoring the health and safety of the instrument
  • operating the instrument on-orbit

Instrument Systems Manager Support

MCST has supported the Instrument development by providing sensor physics and calibration expertise for assessing instrument design concepts, instrument development and test. In this role, MCST was reponsible for:

  • interpreting science requirements to the instrument builder
  • reviewing instrument developer designs, test plans, test results, and data analysis
  • supporting Project reviews
  • answering calibration action items assigned by the Instrument Systems Manager
  • conducting characterization studies necessary to generate parameters required by the Science Team
  • conducting Science Team reviews
